A man from Virginia led the CHP on a lengthy chase from Susanville to Shingletown. At about 10:45PM Tuesday night an officer pulled over a Toyota pickup on Highway 395 because it was weaving and the officer thought the driver might have been sleepy. After stopping on the shoulder the license plate number was run through records and shown to not to match the pickup. Officers then asked the driver to shut off the ignition and put his hands on the steering wheel. Instead, he hit the accelerator and the chase was on. The one-and-a-half hour pursuit continued for more than 83 miles at speeds of up to 85 miles an hour. A spike strip was placed on Highway 44 near Ritts Road east of Shingletown, and it worked. 34-year-old William John Schooley was arrested for charges including felony evading and driving under the influence of drugs.
