Wal-Mart Fined For Improper Medi-Cal Billing

Wal-Mart has made a settlement with the federal government concerning many Millions of Dollars of false billing to Medi-Cal. Pharmacies are required to confirm that certain drugs are dispensed only for certain diagnoses. If drugs are prescribed for something outside an approved diagnosis the pharmacy must submit a request with a justification. The Justice Department says Wal-Mart did not do that process, but instead dispensed drugs for non-approved diagnoses, and then knowingly billed Medi-Cal illegally. Wal-Mart has 290 stores in California, and 283 of them have pharmacies. The company has paid a fine of 1.65 Million Dollars to resolve the issue. The violations were first brought to light by a Wal-Mart pharmacist in the Sacramento area, who will get a whistleblower reward of $264,000.
