DA: Officers Actions Justified In Fatal Shooting

The district attorney’s office says Anderson Police were justified in shooting a man at a motel in March. Video surveillance footage was used to piece together the events around 9:30PM the night of March 26th. Officer Tyler Finch was driving through the parking lot of the Motel 6 on McMurray Drive checking for stolen vehicles when he ran the plate on a Dodge van and found it had been reported stolen from Enterprise Rental Car. 53-year-old Edward Parinella had rented the van more than a month earlier and never returned it. Checking with motel staff, the officer learned that Parinella had arrived earlier that day and checked into room 210. Officer Finch saw someone peek out the window of that room, and he was given a key card by staff. As Officers David Starkey and Tyler Spurgeon arrived along with Sergeant Casey Day to back him up, Finch approached the room and pounded on the door. He announced himself as a police officer and continued knocking and demanding that the occupant come out of the room. After one minute and 38 seconds of that, the key card was used to open the door. As the door swung open, Parinella came out shooting. He had a 9 millimeter semiauto handgun and he shot finch twice in the chest. Those were the only shots he squeezed off before he was answered with a barrage of gunfire. A total of 19 rounds were fired by the three officers. From the time the door opened until the officers stopped firing was less than 10 seconds. The bullets fired by Parinella did not penetrate through Finch’s protective Kevlar vest and he sustained only minor injuries. The use of force by officers has been ruled as justified.
