Trial began Tuesday for a 39-year-old Redding man accused in the murder of a Burney gas station cashier. David Wicks was killed December 21st while working at a Shell Station in Johnson Park. Surveillance shows a person in a yellow rain suit torching Wicks and the store. DNA testing of discarded items found in the area led to Juan Manuel Venegas. No motive has been identified. Venegas is charged with premeditated murder with special circumstances, including a torture allegation. The Shasta County District Attorney’s Office will not seek capital punishment.
