A CHP official’s alleged road rage case has been handed off and has landed in the state attorney general’s office. On July 21st a big rig driver’s dash cam captured footage that shows the conclusion of the incident. In the video, the westbound truck crests the top of the Knighton Road overpass in time to see a man fall from where he had been standing on the running board of an eastbound big rig tanker truck. The man appears to be unconscious as he falls to the ground, his body limp, and bounces on the asphalt. Another man remains standing on the running board and reaches in the driver’s window with what appear to be punches before stepping down to assist the man on the ground. The truck then pulls away and goes around the car blocking its way. The unconscious man was apparently Todd Garr, Assistant Chief of the CHP Northern Division Office in Redding. He had allegedly stopped in front of the big rig to block its way before confronting the truck driver. Garr was off duty at the time. CHP administration in Sacramento has said very little about the case, just that an investigative report has been sent to the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office for review. Shasta County D.A. Stephanie Bridgett has sent the case back to Sacramento to be handled by the attorney general’s office. Bridgett’s husband works for the Highway Patrol and she wants to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest. Meanwhile Garr is still an employee of the CHP, but nobody has said if he’s is on administrative leave or not.
ect poorly on the CHP.
