Sheriff’s Office Seeking Clues After Skull Found Near Burney

A human skull found near Burney three weeks ago remains a mystery. On July 21st a forester was marking trees for a logging company in the woods off tamarack road about 3 miles south of Burney when he discovered a human skull. Deputies responded to the area, which was not accessible by vehicle. There was a lot of ferns, leaves, pine needles and other brush and natural debris littered around the area but no obvious disturbances or other body parts were found. A week later a grid search by Shasta County Search and Rescue was done of a quarter mile radius and still nothing of interest was found. They also checked nearby roads and turnouts. The skull appeared to be relatively fresh because it still had dried tissue attached to the bone, but no apparent signs that animals had gotten to it.  No leads have been drawn from a check of missing persons reports or people fleeing law enforcement or abandoned vehicles or Native American ritual burials. Anyone who may have helpful information should call the sheriff’s major crimes unit at 245-6135.
