Investigators Say Smoking Teens Sparked July Fire

Redding fire investigators say that several teens smoking pot were responsible for starting a fire that severely damaged a home and destroyed 2 outbuildings last month. Investigators said Friday that they have identified the 3 juveniles who started the fire. On July 17th a 15-year-old boy and two girls aged 13 & 15 apparently had gathered in a wooded area off Peppertree Lane to smoke pot together. Redding Fire Department says that one of the teens was playing with a lighter and sparked the fire. They tried to stomp the quickly spreading fire out, but when they were unable to get the fire out they fled the scene. The teens did not call 911 or report the fire, according to investigators. The parents of one of the juveniles came forward days after they learned of their child’s involvement. Criminal charges will be filed by the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office.
