Update: Truck Driver Suffers Major Burns When Freightliner Catches Fire

Details have been released by the CHP about a big rig that crashed and burned Sunday night, shutting down Southbound Interstate Five. Just before 10 O’clock 57-year-old Jeffrey Smith was driving a Freightliner with an empty box trailer approaching the junction of I-5 and Highway 299. For some reason he allowed the tractor-trailer to drift to the right until it got to the guard rail. The big rig then rode the guard rail until it ended, sending the truck and trailer onto the roadside, where it struck a tree and burst into flames. Smith was able to get out of the truck and a passerby helped him get to a safe distance away as the rig became completely engulfed in flames. The fire spread to the dry grass and burned about a third of an acre before Redding Firefighters got it extinguished. The southbound lanes of the freeway were closed for about 20 minutes before one lane was opened up. Smith suffered major burns to his face, arms, hands, torso and lower legs. He was transported to Mercy Medical Center and then transferred to the U.C. Davis Burn Center.
