Wanted Man Caught After Chase Down I-5

The driver of a Honda Civic led Shasta County Sheriff’s Deputies on a chase through the clogged southbound lanes of Interstate Five Tuesday. Southbound traffic was very congested with the many eclipse tourists returning to California from Oregon. Just after 11am a deputy saw the Civic on Churn Creek Road being driven erratically and he tried to pull it over but the driver sped away south into Churn Creek Bottom and ran the red light at Knighton Road. After coming to a dead end the Honda driver made a u-turn and drove directly at the patrol car, nearly hitting it, before returning to Knighton Road and onto Southbound I-5. The driver darted in and out of traffic, causing a number of cars and big rigs to veer off the road. A CHP helicopter began monitoring the fleeing car from above and the pursuing patrol cars held back in hopes that the Honda driver would slow down and not cause a crash. The Civic exited at Riverside Avenue and collided with another car. The driver then got out and ran. Oscar Fuentes was captured a short distance away. He’s a wanted man from Mendocino County and the Honda had been stolen from Redding August 2nd. Deputies found ammunition and an empty pistol case inside the car. They retraced the route of the pursuit, but no gun was found. Fuentes was booked into jail on several felony charges.
