Bomb Scare Forces Hundreds To Evacuate

Hundreds of people were evacuated from their homes in East Redding after the discovery of possible bomb making material in an apartment. Redding Police were contacted by Imperial County investigators. They have a man in custody with a history of explosives who used to live at the townhouses at 1446 Victor Avenue. When a search warrant was served at the unoccupied home Wednesday a large quantity of powder material was found that was believed to be explosive. The box that contained it was labeled “explosive”. About 350 people from surrounding homes and businesses were ordered to evacuate and Victor Avenue was closed from Dana Drive to Old Alturas. The Shasta County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad was called, and their routine is a long slow process. Sergeant Les James tells us the bomb squad’s robot retrieved a sample of the material for testing. It turned out to be a non-explosive precursor material used for bomb making but was not dangerous. All of the evacuations were lifted.
