Boating Safety Issues Safety Warning Ahead Of Busy Holiday Weekend

It’s been a tragic summer on Lake Shasta, with three child drowning deaths, and the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office Boating Safety Unit wants people to be extra careful this Labor Day weekend. The three-day holiday weekend traditionally marks the close of Summer recreation, regardless of the fact that Summer heat is far from over. Boaters are reminded that the law requires an approved life jacket on board readily accessible for each person. Children under age 13 must wear a life jacket while on board any boat that’s not anchored, moored or beached. There are specific rules for specific waterways, such as Lake Shasta’s 15 mile per hour speed limit at night. It’s a boater’s responsibility to know the rules. To help with that, the State Parks Boating Division will be at Bridge Bay Saturday and Sunday from 10AM to 2PM handing out information and safety equipment, including life vests while supplies last.
