Man Leads RPD Officers On Chase Near DUI Checkpoint

No drunks were arrested by Redding Police at a sobriety checkpoint Thursday night, but a stolen car was recovered after a chase. Between 6 and 11PM a total of 832 vehicles passed through the checkpoint on Highway 273 near Girvan Road in South Redding. 19 drivers were stopped for further investigation and 2 field sobriety tests were given. One driver was cited for a suspended license and one person was cited and released on a misdemeanor warrant. When an officer noticed a car with no front license plate he tried to stop it but the driver took off and a chase was on. The driver reached 90 miles an hour on South Bonnyview and officers gave up the chase for safety reasons, but a CHP helicopter tracked the car from overhead and followed it to a home, where CHP ground units arrested 25-year-old Michael Marchand Heller of Anderson. The car was stolen.
