Woman Allegedly Attacks Elderly Woman With A Knife

An elderly resident of the Lorenz Hotel was accosted and injured by a woman Monday morning. The Lorenz is one of Redding’s oldest buildings and now serves as low-income senior housing. Redding Police say the whole incident was captured on surveillance video as 78-year-old David Kelsay had just left his room and walked outside onto the sidewalk. He was approached by a woman armed with a knife who demanded to be let inside the hotel. She then held the knife to Kelsay’s chest and threatened to kill him if he didn’t open the door.  Kelsay believed her and tried to comply but he dropped his keys. As the woman was distracted by that, Kelsay grabbed her arm to try and control the knife, but she swung her hand and slashed the knife across his forearm, making a two inch cut. The woman then fled. A short distance away a responding Redding Police Officer detained 36-year-old Mariann O’Dell, in possession of a knife. She was identified by Kelsay as the same woman and booked into jail.
