Crews Battling Helena Fire Face Steep Terrain

Firefighters battling the devastating Helena Fire faced increased fire activity Monday. The fire is now being managed along with the Fork Fire and has burned over 17,500 acres. The Fork Fire is burning to the north in the Trinity Alps Wilderness and has burned nearly 3,500 acres. Crews are reporting overall containment of 47%. Crews had anticipated increased activity due to the warmer and drier weather, as the fire moved through large heavy downed logs on very steep terrain. Several schools reopened Monday, and power has been restored along the Highway 299 corridor after PG&E replaced several downed power poles.
