Drivers Urged To Watch For Deer As Rutting Season Begins

Bucks have got just one thing on their minds this time of year, and it’s got nothing to do with the front end of your car. Drivers need to be especially cautious on the roads for the next several weeks because it’s rutting season. That means male deer are moving around much more than usual as they seek mates. They also are less wary of dangers, such as automobiles, so extra caution should be observed by drivers, especially at night. Captain Lee Anne Smith of animal regulation says her officers get an increasing number of deer versus vehicle calls starting in October of each year. Such collisions should be reported to 241-2550. Some of Redding’s hot spots for deer include North Market south of Lake, Buenaventura, Quartz Hill, South Bonnyview near the river and Highway 44.
