Felon Leads Officers On Chase In Stolen Vehicle

A chase Sunday afternoon went from Redding through the City of Shasta Lake and back into Redding before ending with a crash that trapped the driver. At 5 O’clock a Redding Police Officer at Lake and Oasis spotted a 1997 Honda Accord that had been reported stolen.  When he tried to pull the car over the driver sped away up Lake Boulevard. With the officer in pursuit the car took Shasta Dam Boulevard through Shasta Lake City, crossing onto the wrong side of the road several times before heading south on Interstate 5 at 90 miles an hour. A CHP helicopter began tracking the chase from above and watched as the Honda exited North Market Street. It didn’t go far from there as the car crashed at North Market and Northpointe Drive. The Honda spun out of control and flipped onto its side against a tree.  Police had to pry the car open to get the driver out, though he was not injured. 21-year-old Chase Alexander Mattson was arrested. It was his third felony arrest of the year. He was arrested by the RPD in May for vehicle theft and in June for attempted murder.
