The Redding City Council will be asked at Tuesday’s meeting to approve the sale of the old police station to the McConnell Foundation, although plans to designate the proceeds toward a sobering center are very much in question. The price McConnell will pay for the California Street building is $685,000 or the appraised value, whichever is more. In May the council showed support for an idea to dedicate $375,000 of the money to a sobering center to be run by a non-profit, but as of yet no organization has stepped up and shown interest in running such a facility. The sheriff has offered space in the jail building for a sobering center but that still doesn’t answer the significant question of who will run it, so the money is likely to just be absorbed into the general fund.
