Girl Rescued From Lake Shasta Passes Away

A three year old girl rescued from the bottom of Lake Shasta last month has died. It’s been three long weeks in intensive care since Talya Benzinger’s family found her in 70 feet of water at Lake Shasta. The Benzingers were enjoying a houseboat vacation on the lake, and had just finished dinner and were getting their children ready for bed when they noticed she was missing. Her toothbrush was found floating near the boat according to the Shasta County Sheriffs Office. Mark Benzinger of Kneeland in Humboldt County borrowed some SCUBA gear from a neighboring boat and began to search underwater for the girl. After several minutes he found her on the bottom. She was taken to Mercy Medical Center before being transferred to UC Davis Medical Center. Talya passed away on Friday. Shasta Lake has claimed the lives of four children this year.
