Fishing Guides Rescue Infant From Sacramento River

An infant is alive thanks to some fishermen on the Sacramento River. At around 11AM Friday morning fishing guides Chris King and Darrin Deel, each in a different boat, were fishing with clients on the river in Redding when they spotted a woman and a baby floating in the 50 degree water. The mother was pulled into Deel’s boat while the baby was pulled into King’s boat. The 7-month-old baby girl was freezing and had stopped breathing. King’s customer, David Meister of Livermore, immediately began CPR and was able to revive the baby.  After the boats met medical personnel under the Cypress Bridge at Park Marina, the baby was taken to Mercy to be stabilized, then flown to UC Davis for intensive care. She’s expected to make a full recovery. The mother, 37-year-old Kathryn Marie Thompson, told Redding Police that she had been trying to cross the river while carrying her baby, and reportedly said that she knew the danger but was listening to the voices in her head. She was booked into jail for felony child endangerment and attempted murder.
