Sprinkler System Helps Firefighters Douse Lorenz Hotel Fire

After a fire broke out in one of the largest and oldest buildings in Downtown Redding, it’s elderly tenants were evacuated. The Lorenz Hotel at California and Yuba Streets opened as Redding’s grandest hotel in 1902. The federal government purchased it in 1991 and spent $5 Million on repairs before selling it for One Dollar to a local entity to house low income seniors and disabled. In one of two major renovations, heat-activated fire sprinklers were installed throughout the building, designed to douse only the fire affected areas. The fire at around 1AM Sunday morning involved only one room on the second floor and the sprinkler system did it’s job, according to Redding Fire Battalion Chief Sean Coleman. California Street and Yuba Street were closed for a while. Nobody was hurt.
