Shasta Lake Hoping To Cash In On Growing Pot Industry

The City of Shasta Lake is trying to give their budding cannabis industry a boost and secure their place on the map as a Northstate marijuana mecca. City Manager John Duckett says the taxes established for retail cannabis cultivation and production are starting out intentionally low to keep the city competitive to attract large commercial cannabis operations. Duckett points out that the city has a lot of industrial zoned land, but not a lot of vacant existing buildings suitable for cannabis businesses. Therefore, he says, large expenditures will be needed for new construction of such buildings. The initial tax for commercial cultivation is starting at $1 per square foot. It’ll ramp up to $5 per square foot by 2022.
