Gunman’s Father, Friend Killed In Lake County Attack

CLEARLAKE OAKS, Calif. (AP) – Authorities say a gunman killed his 85-year-old father and his longtime friend during a bizarre rampage in Lake County. Sixty-one-year-old Alan Ashmore was arrested Monday at a roadblock after he allegedly shot at houses, a car and a gas station in Clearlake Oaks. He also pulled guns at a convenience store and a winery. Investigators Tuesday are still trying to determine the motive. Ashmore remains jailed without bail. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office says Ashmore argued Monday morning with a 22-year-old Middletown woman at his home, held her at knifepoint and shot her in the foot. Lt. Norm Taylor says Ashmore separately killed his father, Douglas Ashmore, and a friend, 64-year-old Richard Braden. Ashmore also allegedly wounded a California Highway Patrol officer and set several small wildfires before his arrest.
