Fire Sparked By Lightning In September Continues To Burn

Just over the hills to the southwest of Redding, a stubborn wildfire continues to burn and produce smoke. After burning more than 13,400 acres, the Buck Fire is now 71% contained and is not likely to grow any larger. Still, full containment will probably not be declared until significant rains come to douse whatever hot spots remain. The Buck Fire was sparked by lightning September 12th near Black Rock Mountain in the northern part of the Yolla Bolla Wilderness. Far to the north of that, the Helena Fire also will not be declared contained until rains ensure that it’s out. The 22,000 acre Helena Fire ripped through the Junction City area starting August 30th and destroyed 72 homes.
