Investigators Interview Boy’s Friends After Toxicology Results

Officials are taking a closer look at the drowning death of a Mount Shasta City teenager in Lake Siskiyou last month. Just before 2AM on September 3rd, an anonymous 9-1-1 caller said that 2 hours earlier they had seen 14-year-old Jose Anthony Reyes Jr. swimming near the public beach but then he could not be found and the caller went home, assuming that Reyes had gone home as well. The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office searched the shoreline and found nothing. Reyes’s father and some friends were contacted but they hadn’t seen him.  The sheriff’s dive team made an underwater search the next day and found the boy’s body on the bottom of the lake about 50 feet deep. The sheriff’s office said at the time that there was no evidence of foul play. Now that toxicology results have been received by the coroner’s office, the sheriff’s office has a few questions for Reyes’s friends. The tests showed that the teen had high concentrations of alcohol in his system, as well as THC, the active ingredient in marijuana. The sheriff wants to know if Reyes’s companions that night made enough of an effort to look after him when he decided to go swimming, and why it took so long for one of them to report his absence. The case will likely be sent to the district attorney for review.
