3 Arrested As NPU Steps Up Patrols Of Hilltop Hotels

Timing was everything inĀ  a series of arrests by Redding’s Neighborhood Police Unit Tuesday night. There’s been an increase in car break-ins in the Hilltop Area so the unit was working some hotel parking lots Tuesday night. They were at the La Quinta Inn when they saw a man near a parked car. When the car alarm went off, the man started walking away and he was detained. Officers say 26-year-old Joshua Alexander Ellis eventually admitted that he’s a homeless heroin addict and that he checks the doors of parked cars looking for valuables to support his drug habit. As officers took a closer look at the car he had been messing with they recognized it as a car that had been captured in numerous red light camera photos and the driver was wanted for questioning. The car was reported as overdue by its owner in Washington State. As luck would have it, the driver of the car walked out of the back of the hotel with a woman and approached the car. 25-year-old William Ashmun allegedly had the keys to the car and was on felony probation, so a search of his hotel room was done, reportedly turning up heroin for sale and methamphetamine. The woman with him was 26-year-old Elizabeth Schwerin, who had a no-bail warrant. All three people were arrested.
