PG&E Donates Land To Protect Wetlands

To ensure that some ecologically important wetlands in Eastern Shasta County remain that way, PG&E has donated large tracts of land to conservation groups. A large portion of McArthur Swamp will be preserved in perpetuity. For many years the nearly 4500 acres of land has been marshy in the wet season and used for cattle grazing in the dry season. It’s a vital stop for migrating Ducks and Geese along the Pacific Flyway. It’s also within the ancestral territory of the Ajumawi Band of the Pit River Tribe. The land donation is part of an agreement PG&E made in their 2003 bankruptcy settlement to eventually protect 140,000 acres of wetlands on PG&E property. The company will keep almost 3200 acres of the McArthur Swamp for hydropower generation.
