Young Murder Suspect Hangs Himself At Shasta County Jail

A teenage killer who confessed as part of a plea bargain has apparently killed himself in Shasta County Jail. Elioenaid Rivera was only 17 when he was arrested for his part in a violent crime spree committed in October of 2015. His codefendants were Sergio Martinez, Jose Luna, and two brothers both named Felix Ruben Ayala. They’re accused of murdering 61-year-old Bradley Stephen Yoder at his house on Shasta View Drive, as well as an attempted robbery with a shot fired at a Shasta Lake home, a home invasion robbery in the town of Live Oak in Sutter County, and the armed robbery of the Bare Roots Hydroponics Store on East Cypress Avenue. Last year Rivera agreed to plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter and testify against the others in exchange for a 15 year sentence. It later was revealed that Rivera was the one who actually slit Yoder’s throat. That information prompted the public defender’s office to protest Rivera’s plea bargain. The trial is currently underway but Rivera had not yet provided his testimony. Last week he was found dead in his jail cell after apparently hanging himself with a bedsheet. It’s unclear what that means for the other defendants.
