Carrillo Wins Los Angeles Special Election To Assembly

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – Democrat Wendy Carrillo of Los Angeles is set to become the California Assembly’s newest member. Carrillo defeated fellow Democrat Luis Lopez in a special election to fill the vacated seat of now-Congressman Jimmy Gomez. Lopez conceded Tuesday night. Carrillo will take office in January, giving Democrats back the supermajority needed to pass tax and fee increases. With Carrillo’s victory, women will hold 27 seats in the California Legislature. That’s the lowest number in years. Carrillo is a former labor leader and journalist. She is an immigrant from El Salvador who became a legal resident of the United States at age 13. She ran against Gomez for Congress earlier this year.
