A decision has been made as a trial awaits a couple accused of a crime that horrified the three counties it touched. In December of 2015 the bodies of two young children were found inside an East Redding storage unit. 3-year-old Delylah Tara and 6-year-old Shaun Tara had been in the custody of Tami Huntsman and her 17-year-old boyfriend, Gonzalo Curiel. Officials believe the children died in Salinas as a result of ongoing physical abuse, and the couple then drove their bodies to Redding. They were arrested after a severely abused 9-year-old girl was found in a locked car in Quincy. Huntsman would not reveal the location of the two younger children, but under intensive questioning her boyfriend, Curiel, reportedly pointed investigators to Triple-A Enterprise Stor-All on Tarmac Road in Redding. A jury trial had been set for February of this year but questions were raised with the passage of Proposition 57, which mandates that a decision to prosecute a teenager as an adult be made by a judge and not by a district attorney. A judge has now decided that Curiel can, in fact, be tried as an adult. Otherwise he would have had to be released before age 23. If convicted, he’ll face a maximum of 25 years to life in prison. Prosecutors are going for the death penalty against Huntsman. Because it’s believed the kids died in Salinas, the trial will be held in Monterey County. It starts March 5th.
