Nurses Hold Candlelight Vigil To Bring Attention To Patient Safety Issues

Nurses at Shasta Regional Medical Center in Redding are calling attention to issues they say are eroding the quality and safety of patient care. The group of registered nurses says they’ve reported 261 instances of unsafe or substandard conditions at the hospital since September. These include faulty computers, vitals monitors and other essential medical devices. They also say that having no 24 hour pharmacy on site delays patient care. The result, according to the union representing the nurses, has been a steady loss of experienced nursing staff at SRMC. Most RN’s have been there for less than 5 years. They voted in September to join the California Nurses Association. The nurses group held a candlelight vigil outside the hospital Thursday night.
