Deputy Helps Recover Two Stolen Vehicles

Two stolen vehicles were spotted by the same Shasta County Sheriff’s Deputy within a half-hour Thursday afternoon. At 5:04PM, Deputy Trevor Gusaas was on Southbound Interstate Five near South Bonneyview when he ran a records check on a 1996 Honda Civic that was in front of him. Dispatchers told him the car had been reported stolen the day before, so Deputy Gusaas called for backup and a high-risk stop with guns drawn was made north of Riverside Drive in Anderson. Driver John Capelli said he had borrowed the car from a friend but when the owner was contacted he said he didn’t know Capelli. He was arrested and the car was returned to the owner. At 5:35PM Deputy Gusaas was still at the location when a Nissan pickup went by that matched the description of a stolen vehicle. The truck exited at Riverside so Deputy Gusaas radioed deputies he knew were in that area. They followed the pickup and ran the plate through records, showing it had been stolen from Redding. The truck pulled into the 7-11 on North Street. The driver, William Peoples, was found to be on parole. He said he had bought the truck for $300 but he had no proof. He was arrested and the truck was returned to the owner.
