CHP: Intoxicated Driver Driving Over 100 MPH Crashes On Highway 44

A Redding man had a spectacular end to his wild ride into town Saturday night. At around 9:30PM a CHP helicopter crew spotted a 2014 Audi traveling westbound on Highway 44 and as it passed under the Churn Creek Road overcrossing they estimated its speed at well over 100 miles an hour. They tracked the car and saw it almost crash into 3 other vehicles between I5 and Sundial Bridge Drive. It didn’t get much further because when it got the s-curve over Liberty Street the driver couldn’t handle it and it hit the center wall. The impact caused the little Audi to go airborne and vault over the wall, landing on its roof in the eastbound lanes. No other vehicles were involved and the CHP says the only person in the car was 21-year-old Lance Jones. He was wearing his seatbelt and managed to climb out of the car on his own. As officers were talking to him Jones allegedly admitted to being intoxicated. He tried to walk away from the interview and was arrested. He was the released to the custody of Mercy Medical Center for treatment of his major injuries.
