California Senate Approves Medication Abortion On Campuses

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – California public universities would be required to offer medication abortion on all 34 campuses under legislation approved in the state Senate. The bill now goes to the Assembly. It would be the first such mandate nationwide and a vast expansion of a service that’s rare on college campuses. None of the University of California or California State University campuses currently offer abortion services at their health centers. The Tara Foundation of San Francisco, the Women’s Foundation of California and a third anonymous donor have agreed to pay up to $20 million in startup costs such as ultrasound equipment and staff training. SB320 would require all university campuses to offer medication abortion by 2022 assuming the money comes through. The Senate voted 25-13.
