Driver Found Dead After Car Crashes Into Pond

It’s not known why a driver left Highway 44 and landed his car upside-down in a pond between Palo Cedro and Redding. The deceased driver has already been identified as a 47-year-old man from Manton, though his name has not yet been released. He was apparently not the owner of the car, which was registered out of Florence, Oregon. The gold 1999 Chrysler Concorde was found mostly submerged in a pond south of Highway 44 and was visible from Gilbert Drive. Another driver spotted the underside of the car at around 7 O’clock Thursday morning. CHP Officer Jason Morton says there are no signs of swerving or braking or skid marks- just a couple of tracks coming from the eastbound lane, through the grass and down the embankment. The coroner’s office will try and determine if the man may have suffered a medical condition or simply fell asleep. Highway traffic was diverted onto Gilbert Drive while the Shasta County Sheriff’s Department Dive Team searched underwater to be sure there were no additional victims, and a tow truck driver pulled the car from the pond.
