Public Comment Sought On Marijuana Ordinance

The City of Redding’s new marijuana ordinance has been written in draft form, and citizens may review it and make suggestions about changing it if they wish. The 2016 proposition that legalized recreational use of cannabis has certain mandates that cannot be overridden by local governments.  That includes allowing anyone to grow up to six plants in their home for their own personal use, regardless of medical need. That’s been in effect since the beginning of last year. What’s much more under the authority of local regulation is the commercial cultivation and sale of cannabis. The City of Shasta Lake hit the ground running in terms of embracing and the industry and its considerable revenue potential. Shasta County and the City of Anderson have taken a prohibitionary stance, but the City of Redding is cautiously building a framework to regulate and tax. Some city residents have long complained about the odor and exposure involved in allowing the outdoor backyard cultivation of medical marijuana. That will no longer be allowed. It’s all being forced indoors. For now a temporary ban on the industry is still in effect in the city, but the new proposed ordinance details exactly how the city may regulate indoor commercial cultivation, distribution, laboratory testing, storage, delivery, manufacture, and retail sale of the plant and its derivatives. The planning commission will review the draft on February 13th and it’ll go to the city council on March 6th. The entire 71 page document can be found through a link at cityofredding.org.
