Man Shot Multiple Times By RPD Officers Near Elementary School

A man was shot by Redding Police Wednesday in North Redding. The man had been reported as causing trouble Wednesday morning at the Tower Mart at the corner of Oasis Road and Lake Boulevard. Several hours later he was reported by an employee at Lake Liquors a few doors down, where he was apparently breaking windows. He then headed north on foot to Hiatt Drive, where Buckeye Elementary School was in session. School staff called 9-1-1 to say a man with a baseball bat was on campus. When a Redding Police Officer arrived the man was just leaving the playground area, and he ran when he saw the police car. A backup officer arrived moments later and the two confronted the suspect behind a nearby home. He was refusing to comply with orders to put the bat down, according to Redding Police Captain Eric Wallace. After a brief exchange of words the officers opened fire on the man, striking him with 5 or 6 rounds. The investigation is still in its beginning stages.
