Details have been released about an officer-involved shooting in north Redding Wednesday. Although he was shot with 5 or 6 rounds at close range by Redding Police Officers, 38-year-old Levi Strauss Nicholson -a.k.a. Grigalba- is expected to recover. The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office is the lead investigative agency in the case. Apparently Nicholson had been causing trouble earlier in the day, stealing an energy drink during a disturbance at 8:15am at the Power Mart at the corner of Oasis Road and Lake Boulevard. At 11am an employee at Lake Liquors a few doors down said Nicholson stole another energy drink from there, and then used a baseball bat to break a window out of the employee’s car. At 12:43, staff at Buckeye Elementary School called 911 to say a man was on campus with a baseball bat, acting strangely and hiding behind a dumpster. Redding Police arrived five minutes later and when Nicholson saw them he ran behind a house on Hiatt Drive across the street from the school. Two RPD officers confronted Nicholson and ordered him to put the bat down. Instead, he reportedly held the bat over his head as if to strike and advanced toward the officers. They opened fire and Nicholson hit the ground. Investigators note that the shots were fired to the north, away from the school. Nicholson was still uncooperative and held his hands under his body, so a K9 was used to help subdue him and get him into handcuffs. Nicholson is now at Mercy Medical Center in the custody of the Sheriff’s Office. When he gets out he’ll be booked into jail for brandishing and assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.
