Woman Who Assaulted Elderly Man Sentenced To 4 Years In Prison

A Redding woman has been sentenced to prison for attacking a wheelchair-bound resident of the Lorenz Hotel in September. The Lorenz, downtown on California Street, is one of Redding’s oldest buildings and now serves as low-income senior housing. The whole incident was captured on surveillance video as 78-year-old David Kelsay had just left his room and rolled out onto the sidewalk. He was approached by 36-year-old Mariann O’Dell. She was armed with a knife and demanded to be let inside. She then held the knife to Kelsay’s chest and threatened to kill him if he didn’t open the door. Kelsay believed her and tried to comply but he dropped his keys. As O’Dell was distracted by that, Kelsay grabbed her arm to try to get control of the knife, but she swung her hand and slashed the knife across his forearm, making a two inch cut. O’Dell then fled but was caught a short distance away by a Redding Police Officer. O’Dell pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon and making criminal threats. Both felonies count as strikes against future convictions. On Thursday, O’Dell was sentenced to 4 years in state prison.
