Residents in Eastern Shasta County may see some low flying helicopters this week.They’ll be flying at 2-to-300 feet along electrical distribution lines checking on drought-stricken trees for PG&E. Wednesday and Thursday between 8AM and 4PM flights will take place near Round Mountain, Montgomery Creek, Oak Run, Big Bend and Whitmore. Several years of drought have made trees susceptible to Bark Beetles and other insects, and foresters will be riding in the copters to spot trees that are threatening power lines. Trees identified from the air will later be inspected on the ground, and then the landowners will be contacted to schedule tree work. The Forest Service says Bark Beetles have killed more than 100 Million trees in California. Investigators have determined that a tree falling into power lines caused the Helena Fire in Trinity County last year, and that’s the suspected cause of the devastating wine country fires as well.
