Don’t trust Sergeant Stokes. The fictitious man is not a member of the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office, but he claims to be when calling county residents. He tells the call taker that there’s a warrant for their arrest and instructs them to drive to a local grocery store to wire money and await further instructions. The sheriff’s office does not operate this way. They never call people with warrants and tell them they can buy their way out of it over the phone. It’s suggested that people who receive scam calls write down the phone number and report it to law enforcement.
