NPU: Arrests Driver In Fatal December Crash

An arrest has been made for a fatal crash that happened in December. A warrant was issued in March for 27-year-old Alexander James Kirby charging him with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. He was the apparent driver of a Toyota Camry that was speeding on Balls Ferry Road south of Anderson very early on December 15th when it flipped and hit a tree, a power pole, a fence and a parked car. 22-year-old Sean Binder was killed in the wreck. Kirby has ties to Texas and there was some concern that he might try to flee there and avoid arrest. That concern multiplied April 6th when the Record Searchlight learned about the warrant and published a story about it, potentially sending an inadvertant warning to Kirby of his impending arrest. The district attorney’s office asked for help from Redding’s Neighborhood Police Unit, and they staked out an apartment on Helen Street where Kirby has been known to visit. Friday afternoon he was seen smoking a cigarette in front of the apartment and when an officer approached him, he reportedly tried to run and resisted arrest, but he was subdued and booked into jail.
