Park Service Will Use Goats To Clear Vegetation

Park Service officials at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area are asking the public to please not bother the goats. Starting this week a herd of goats has been hired to graze vegetation in the Tower House Historic District, Upper Clear Creek Picnic Area and Grizzly Gulch. The areas were grazed by livestock starting in the 1850s, and the absence of grazing has caused the areas to be overgrown with a number of non-native species, including Himalaya Berry, Yellow Star Thistle and Scotch Broom. Fencing will contain the goats and they’ll be guarded by dogs. Visitors are advised not to cross the fencing or approach the goats.
