An Anderson man will be in prison for the rest of his life after a judge ruled that he was sane when he committed a double murder over two years ago. 57-year-old Michael Helsby and 61-year-old Georgia Engelhaupt were found dead on January 14th of 2016 inside their apartment on Manter Drive in Anderson. 40-year-old Anthony Baxter was taken into custody the following morning and described the killings in graphic detail to investigators. He said he suffocated both of them until they were unconscious and then stabbed them twice each in the heart with a butter knife he found on their kitchen counter. Baxter, who had just been released from prison a few days earlier, said he killed the couple because they disrespected their roommate, Baxter’s girlfriend. He believed they were planning to evict her. Baxter eventually changed his plea to not guilty by reason of insanity. He was convicted last week on two counts of first degree murder. Tuesday a judge ruled that he was sane based on the testimony of psychologists. In July he’ll be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
