Cal-Trans Announces Major Improvements To Interstate 5

Funding has been secured by Cal-Trans to widen Interstate Five between Redding and Anderson to a six lane highway. The nearly $66-Million grant will go toward one of 64 projects around the state announced Thursday by the California Transportation Commission. The freeway will be six lanes continuously from Deschutes road to Bonnyview. The funding will also go toward a new median barrier and guard railing, as well as a new Anderson Creek Bridge and South Anderson railroad overcrossing. The total price tag on the project is $120-Million Dollars, with the remainder coming from existing state, federal, Shasta County and City of Anderson funding sources. Construction is expected to begin in September.

Cal-Trans will spend $57-Million Dollars to reconstruct Interstate Five between Mount Shasta and Dunsmuir. The asphalt will be replaced with reinforced concrete, because it holds up better to snow chains and fluctuations in temperature. The surface is expected to have service life of 40 years. JF Shea will start the job within the next few weeks and drivers can expect some long-term lane closures and re-routing as the project progresses. Cal-Trans expects the project to take 3 years to complete.
