Fire Burns 6 Acres Near Hilltop Drive

A vegetation fire caused an early season scare for residents off Hilltop Drive Monday afternoon. It started at 2:35PM in a gully just west of Interstate Five and just north of Hilltop Drive, though it apparently didn’t originate from either roadway. The first arriving Redding Fire engines accessed the blaze off Southbound I-5 when it was a half acre moving southwest. All the city’s resources were dispatched as the fire quickly spread uphill toward some apartment buildings. Firefighters preventing any structural damage and contained the burn to 6.2 acres of grass and brush in the oak-filled canyon. The cause is undetermined, but investigator Patrick O’Connor says the gully has a history of homeless camps. The fire caused a slowdown on I-5 and Hilltop Drive was closed for a while for fire equipment.
