Sheriff’s Office Kept Busy Over Long Holiday Weekend

Friday’s rainy start to the Memorial Day weekend didn’t keep away a flood of college students from UC Davis, Stanford, UCLA and elsewhere, as Lake Shasta resorts enjoyed a successful 3 days. Hundreds of houseboats were scattered around the lake’s many coves and islands. Deputies with the Shasta County Sheriff’s Boating Safety Unit counted 74 houseboats on the shores of Slaughterhouse Island alone, and that kept them busy. On the water between Friday morning and Monday afternoon, there were 26 field sobriety tests given and 2 boating under the influence arrests, 34 tickets were written among the 359 warnings that were issued for boating violations. Deputies assisted 558 people or boats and made 176 safety equipment inspections. 2 accident reports were made and 6 people were transported for medical reasons, 4 of them alcohol related. UC Davis parked their “safe boat” at Slaughterhouse Island, with EMT’s who handled 90 patients with minor injuries and illnesses. There have been no water-related deaths on Lake Shasta so far this year, though a 21-year-old University of Oregon student died in his tent following a day of drinking during spring break.
