A 38-year-old Redding man who was shot by police after threatening them with a baseball bat has reached a deal with prosecutors. On February 7th Levi Strauss Nicholson was shot with 6 rounds at close range by Redding Police Officers, but then recovered remarkably well. Nicholson had been paroled from prison just a month earlier from a sentence for assault with a deadly weapon. After shoplifting energy drinks from the Tower Mart on Lake Boulevard and using a baseball bat to break the car window of an employee at Lake Liquor, Nicholson showed up on the campus of Buckeye Elementary School, still armed with the baseball bat. When Redding Police arrived Nicholson ran behind a house on Hiatt Drive across the street from the school. Two RPD Officers confronted Nicholson and ordered him to put the bat down. Instead, he held the bat over his head as if to strike and advanced toward the officers. They opened fire and Nicholson hit the ground. A K9 was then used to help subdue him and get him into handcuffs. Wednesday Nicholson entered no contest pleas on two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, and admitted a prior strike. He’ll be sentenced to 10 years 8 months in state prison.
