County Clerk Still Tabulating Votes After Above Average Turnout

Shasta County turnout for the primary election last week was surprisingly good, especially for a non-presidential year. Although some candidates may have already been popping the champagne bottles and basking in the light of victory, some Shasta County races are far from done deals. Shasta County Clerk and Registrar of Voters Cathy Darling Allen says many ballots have not yet been opened. More than 4,000 ballots were dropped off last Monday and well over 10,000 dropped off at polling places on election day. So far, a little more than 26,000 ballots have been counted, but Darling-Allen tells us that with at least 18,000 more ballots to go, the actual voter turnout is likely to be more than 44% of registered voters. Sheriff Tom Bosenko currently leads the race for his job by a margin of around 1200 votes over John Greene. Joe Chimenti leads his challenge of David Kehoe’s District One Supervisor seat by 121 votes. The final tally is not due until 30 days after the election.
