Since its inception in 2016, Redding’s Neighborhood Police Unit has taken almost 70 illegally possessed guns off the streets of Redding. Thursday night officers checked out a car parked near Niles Lane and Greenfield Street with two people inside. The driver, 42-year-old Wesley Varton, is on post release supervision so he and the car were searched. Varton allegedly had Methamphetamine and an unregistered loaded semi-auto 22 caliber pistol was found under the passenger seat. The passenger, 21-year-old Francisco Marquez, reportedly had a bag of 22 caliber bullets in his pocket and he admitted that the gun was his. Both men were arrested.
