High Court Rules In Favor Of Anti-Abortion Centers

The Supreme Court has struck down a California law that regulates anti-abortion crisis pregnancy centers. The challenge to the law was filed in 2015 against the California Attorney General’s Office by two church-affiliated pregnancy centers. One is located in Marysville and the other is Carenet Pregnancy Center in Redding, located across the street from a Planned Parenthood Clinic. Both conservative and liberal justices voiced skepticism in March about the law that requires the centers to tell clients about the availability of contraception, abortion and pre-natal care. The centers say they are being singled out and forced to deliver a message with which they disagree. California says the law is needed to let poor women know all their options. The Supreme Court said Tuesday that the California law probably violates the constitution. The 5-4 ruling also casts doubts on similar laws in Hawaii and Illinois. Abortion rights groups estimate more than 4,000 such pregnancy centers are operating around the nation.
